Tragedy in Schwerte: Parents and children die after electric car accident

On September 7, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred in Schwerte, North Rhine-Westphalia, in which three people, including two children, died. The victims were in an electric car, a Tesla, which crashed into a tree and burst into flames. According to information from Kleine Zeitung, any help came too late for the three occupants; they burned in the wreckage of the vehicle. The identity of the deceased was not initially disclosed.

The accident occurred around 2 p.m. on Rote-Haus-Straße when the driver of the Tesla tried to overtake another vehicle and lost control of his car. The vehicle left the road and crashed into a tree. Residents heard screams from the burning vehicle and tried to help with a fire extinguisher, but were unsuccessful because the flames immediately flared up. A total of three vehicles were involved in the accident and recovery efforts continued until the evening.

Emergency response and investigations

The incident required the deployment of numerous rescue workers, including two rescue helicopters. The police and emergency services were on site to manage the situation. However, there was uncertainty about possible additional injuries. The road was closed around the scene of the accident because a fallen tree was blocking the road. The investigation into the exact cause of the accident is still ongoing.

In this context, it is also worth mentioning that an international research team has found that drivers of electric cars tend to be involved in traffic accidents more often than drivers of conventional vehicles with gasoline or diesel engines. According to a study published by Ingenieur.de, an analysis of telematics data showed that electric and hybrid vehicle drivers are more likely to have claims due to negligent behavior. This could also provide a context for the tragic accident in Schwerte.

In addition to the safety issues, owning an electric car also poses higher costs. Research shows that repair costs for electric vehicles are on average 6.7% more expensive than internal combustion engine vehicles. This information sheds new light on the challenges vehicle owners face, particularly with regard to safety and financial considerations in the event of an accident.
