Tragic paragliding accident: Man dies after unsuccessful roll on Hafelekar

On December 2, 2024, a tragic paragliding accident occurred in the Austrian Alps. At 2:20 p.m., a 30-year-old man took the Nordkenttenbahn to Hafelekar in order to fly away from there in his speed glider. According to police, the pilot lost control after taking off, performed a double roll and fell with full force into a steep gully. Witnesses to the incident reported that the man was seriously injured as a result of the impact, and despite immediate first aid measures from three passers-by and the emergency doctor who arrived later, he died before medical attention was received.

The unfortunate man's body was recovered at 2:45 p.m. by a police helicopter and brought to the valley. This incident highlights not only the dangers of paragliding, but also the critical importance of first aid in emergency situations. According to an article by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, it is crucial that first responders act quickly, as the emergency doctor often only arrives after about ten minutes. The first few minutes are therefore extremely urgent. Even if many people have completed a first aid course when getting their driving license, they often find it difficult to actively help in an emergency.

The role of first responders

First responders are often the first to arrive at the scene of an accident and they play a crucial role in the rescue chain. The simplest measures such as securing the scene of the accident, making an emergency call and carrying out life-saving emergency measures can make the difference between life and death. This includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the recovery position and hemostasis. These are skills anyone can learn, and in emergencies it is crucial that someone takes action. Information about first aid courses can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, where the federal government has been promoting first aid training in schools for many years.
