Tourist killed by elephant in South Africa while saving grandchild
A 59-year-old male tourist was killed by an elephant in South Africa's Kruger National Park last weekend while allegedly trying to save his grandchild. This was confirmed by a statement from the park.
Accident in Kruger National Park
According to eyewitness reports, the man and his family had parked near the Malelane reception area on the Crocodile River. As the children ran across a bridge into the bush, an elephant from a nearby herd charged at them, according to the South African National Parks (SANParks).
"He rushed to help the children and was chased and trampled by one of the animals at that moment. He died from his injuries at the scene of the accident on January 25th," the park said in a statement on Monday.
Identity of the victim
The victim was identified as Shaik Adam Shabir Ammed, a 59-year-old from eMkhondo, a town southeast of Johannesburg in Mpumalanga province. He was reportedly trying to save his grandchild, SANParks confirmed to CNN on Friday.
Police investigations
“On the day of the incident, the animal responsible for the death could not be identified as several of them were in the area and immediately retreated while people tried to save the life of the deceased,” SANParks said in the statement.
"SANParks would like to emphasize that the incident is regrettable and unfortunate and calls on the public to refrain from speculation until the police have completed their report in order to allow the family to mourn their loved one with dignity," the statement added.
Cooperation with the authorities
The South African police are investigating this matter. She referred CNN to SANParks for updates on the case. SANParks said it will cooperate fully with police and will not provide any information until police have handed over their final report.
“The management of the park expresses its sincere condolences to the Ammed family and wishes them strength during this difficult time,” the park said.
