Background information on ghost rides
Wrong-way driving is a recurring problem on Austria's roads. In 2024, over 400 reports of wrong-way drivers were registered, which represents a decrease of 10% compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, there were eleven accidents involving wrong-way drivers, including two fatalities and one seriously injured. The main causes of such incidents are often serious driver misconduct, distraction, the influence of alcohol and drugs, as well as confusion and excessive demands.
ASFINAG continuously works on analyzing wrong-way driver reports and accident data from the Ministry of the Interior in order to identify problem areas and improve safety measures. Measures such as checking connection points, signage and floor markings are essential here. The importance of warnings when wrong-way drivers are suspected is also highlighted, as they can potentially save lives.
If drivers receive a wrong-way driver warning, they are advised to remain calm, reduce speed and move into the right lane. Avoiding overtaking maneuvers and waiting at the next parking lot or rest area can be crucial to getting out of the situation safely.
The tragic accident on the A9 once again highlights the dangers caused by wrong-way drivers and the need to be aware and act carefully in road traffic. While the investigation continues, it is hoped that such incidents can be prevented in the future.
