Michael Tanzi was executed in Florida today, 25 years after his horrific act. The convicted murderer kidnapped Miami Herald employee Janet Acosta in 2000. During her lunch break, he forced her to withdraw money using her ATM card before raping and brutally murdering her. Tanzi transported the 49-year-old over a distance of around 30 miles (approx. 48 kilometers) and strangled her. After the crime, he used the time for two days to change his clothes and get food and marijuana. Police eventually arrested him when officers discovered him in Acosta's car in Key West.
After his arrest, Tanzi confessed to another murder: he had previously stabbed a woman named Caroline Holder in Massachusetts. One inspector described him as a “budding serial killer.” Today, Tanzi was executed by lethal injection at Florida State Prison. He is the third prisoner to receive the death penalty in Florida this year. Despite his lawyers' arguments that he could suffer severe pain because of his "morbid obesity" and therefore should not be executed, the state Supreme Court rejected those objections.
