30 km/h zones in Hietzing: Chaos on our streets!
In Vienna-Hietzing, ignoring 30 km/h zones is causing great concern among residents. An angry resident from Jagdschlossgasse has contacted **MeinBezirk** and criticizes the frequent ignoring of speed limits, especially on the stretch between the railway cabinet and Lainzer Platz, where speeds of up to 50 km/h are reached. The situation is particularly dangerous at the zebra crossing in front of an elementary school, where cars often drive much too fast. In several residential areas of the district, such as Steinlechnergasse, speeding regulations are also significantly ignored. In 2022, according to the Board of Trustees for Road Safety, 74 percent of vehicles in Vienna were traveling too fast in 30 km/h zones. To counteract the problem, increased police checks have been ordered on the affected streets.
Police checks and prevention actions
The city police have already considered measures and are relying on mobile traffic controls and laser measurements to strengthen law enforcement on the school routes in Steinlechnergasse and Jagdschlossgasse. This is repeatedly emphasized by the police, but citizens report that the measures do not always achieve the desired results. Penalties for speeding violations in Austria are comparatively low, which leads to a certain degree of discretion in police work, as the Austrian Transport Club notes. More information and resources are therefore needed to increase road safety.
In addition, a joint campaign by the police and ÖAMTC in Vienna draws attention to another safety-relevant aspect: defective vehicle lights. In the “Flying tickets instead of speeding tickets” campaign, the authorities offered free repairs for defective lamps. During twilight, police officers came across some vehicles with light damage and sent the drivers directly to the ÖAMTC workshop, where the lamps were replaced without penalty. According to **MeinBezirk**, 18 lamps could be replaced with this preventative measure, which can be crucial in preventing accidents, as 8,546 “darkness accidents” with personal injury were registered in Austria in 2023.
