In Eastern Switzerland, New Year's Eve was characterized by dangerous incidents and sometimes serious injuries due to improper ignition of fireworks. An incident in Bichwil was particularly alarming: At around 0:20 a.m., three young people, two 19-year-old and a 16-year-old, were injured in an explosion of a fireworks battery. This had been ignited by a 36-year-old man. Fortunately, they were all slightly injured, but had to be taken to the hospital, as the Thurgauer Zeitung reported.

But that wasn't all. In Gossau, a policeman was shot at by unknown people with a firecracker, and a total of over 20 reports about improperly ignited fireworks were received by the cantonal emergency call center. An explosion in Rorschacherberg was particularly worrying: a 36-year-old man manipulated with homemade fireworks, which caused the left forearm to blown away. Three people suffered indefinite injuries when unknowns had fireworks detonated into a crowd in the market hall during a New Year's party.
