Chaotic scenes in Italy when a violent clash broke out between fans after the controversial game between Udinese and Venezia (3:2). According to reports, five Salzburg supporters and a former club member were involved in the turbulent events ORF Salzburg reported. The altercation occurred after a group of Udinese hooligans tried to stop a train carrying Venezia fans traveling from Udine towards Venice.

At Basiliano train station, just 14 kilometers from Udine, around 50 masked hooligans lit fires and threw stones at the carriages in an attempt to force the train to stop. Around 300 Venezia FC fans sat in the wagons, fearing for their lives. Five people from Salzburg were ultimately taken to hospital because of severe bruises, while two other people, including a man from Salzburg and a man from Venice, had to be taken to a clinic with serious injuries, but their lives were not in danger SALZBURG24 reported.

Arrests and consequences

The Italian police reacted quickly and arrested a total of eight people, including five Austrian citizens and two Friulians. They are accused of serious allegations such as disrupting train services and violence during a sporting event. According to the police, those arrested were taken to the prison in Udine and are facing a summary trial. Football clubs and members of the government have strongly condemned the incidents, and Minister for Relations with Parliament Luca Ciriani described the attack as “unacceptable”. Austrian President Claus Salzmann was also critical of the incident and stressed the need to clarify the exact circumstances after hearing various reports.
