Speeding chaos in Styria: Police stop over 200 traffic offenders!
In Styria, Austria, a comprehensive police check against the so-called road runner scene took place on April 18, 2025. This spontaneous gathering of around 150 vehicles led to a massive operation by the Styrian police, which was led by Colonel Klaus Rexeis, deputy head of the Styrian State Transport Department. The checks took place between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. and were intended to stop the numerous traffic violations that often occur at such events. A total of 219 reports were filed and 37 mandates were issued, demonstrating the authorities' determination to take action against traffic offenses.
The police also carried out 164 alcohol pre-tests among the event participants. This measure is particularly relevant because driving under the influence of alcohol not only endangers other road users, but can also result in serious legal consequences. According to ADAC, driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.5 per mille is already an administrative offense that can be punished with a fine of up to 500 euros and a one-month driving ban.
Worrying speeding violations
A key issue at the meeting was the excessive speeding recorded by many drivers. Police documented speeds of 181 km/h in a 130 km/h zone and 151 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. Given these frightening figures, it is unsurprising that measures have been taken, including the removal of the number plates from two vehicles due to imminent danger. This drastic measure shows the police's determination to minimize the risk to public safety.
A driver also had to stop driving because he was driving drunk. This procedure corresponds to the current regulations and reminds us that young drivers up to the age of 21 and novice drivers in the probationary period are subject to an absolute ban on alcohol.
Increase police presence
The Styrian police's focus action is part of a broader strategy to counteract the Road Runner events. It is assumed that such actions will take place more frequently in the future to ensure road safety and to combat dangerous driving behavior. The constant police presence could potentially provide prevention and encourage drivers to act more responsibly.
Given the importance of these measures and the reactions of the population, it remains to be seen how the Road Runner scene will react to these operations. However, it is clear that the dangers of excessive speeding and drunk driving must be taken seriously to prevent tragic accidents.
Today's events can be interpreted as a clear indication that the authorities are ready to take decisive action against risky driving behavior and thus set an example for road safety. Further information on the legal consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol can be found at ADAC.
