The Federal Criminal Police Office (BK) in Vienna has made one of the most significant drug discoveries in recent years. Today it was announced that over 78 kilograms of cocaine had been seized. The suspected perpetrator, a 49-year-old Austrian citizen, was arrested behind the wheel of his vehicle. According to information from Cosmo The vehicle was filled with exactly 78,209.7 grams of cocaine, packed in several sports bags.
The suspect was arrested as part of an attack by special units from the Cobra task force on March 21st. This access marks another important step in the fight against drug trafficking in Austria. On April 1, investigators found an additional 3,089.9 grams of cocaine at the suspect's workplace in Bruck an der Leitha, bringing the total to over 81 kilograms.
The investigation and its consequences
During a house search at the suspect's residence, the police seized 14,400 euros in cash, which is believed to have come from illegal drug transactions. The driver was arrested immediately after the attack and taken to a prison, although further information about him is expected in the near future.
However, the drug problem in Austria remains complex. The “Report on the drug situation in Austria” is prepared annually and commissioned by the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) and the Ministry of Health. The current report deals with developments in 2023 and examines not only the epidemiological situation, but also the political and legal framework, the measures to reduce demand, as well as current drug markets and drug crimes. The report was last updated on January 29, 2024, and previous versions are also available in PDF form at Ministry of Social Affairs.
The new cases and the high amount of drugs confiscated show how serious the drug problem is in Austria and how important the ongoing investigations and measures to combat drug trafficking are. It remains to be seen what further information will come to light about the background to the drug discovery and the suspect's activities.
