Man jumps on polar bear to save woman from attack

A man is recovering from serious injuries after being hit by a Polar bears The authorities in the Canadian province of Ontario report that he jumped to protect his wife from an attack by the animal.

Fort Severn incident

A man and a woman in the town of Fort Severn had left their home before 5 a.m. locally to look for their dogs. While they were in the driveway, "a polar bear pounced on the woman," the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) said in a news release Tuesday.

Brave attempt at protection

"The woman fell to the ground while her husband jumped on the animal to prevent the attack. The bear then attacked the man, inflicting serious but non-life-threatening injuries to his arm and legs," the NAPS added.

Rescued by neighbors

While the man was fighting with the animal, "a neighbor arrived with a gun and shot the bear multiple times. The bear retreated into a nearby wooded area where it died from its injuries," the NAPS continued. Police officers who arrived on scene following reports of gunshots and a possible bear attack “found a dead polar bear,” emphasizing, “Police continued to patrol the area to ensure there were no other bears in the community.”

Frequency of polar bear sightings

Although polar bear sightings are common in the region, attacks are "rare but not unheard of," a police spokesman told CTV News.

Polar bear habitat

Fort Severn is located near Hudson Bay. Polar bears around the bay prefer to hunt seals while on the pack ice. However, when the ice breaks earlier than usual, they look inland for food, which happened earlier than usual in southern Hudson Bay this year, explained Alysa McCall, director of conservation education and scientist at Polar Bears International, in an interview with CBC News.

Impact of climate change

At the time of the attack, McCall noted that "maybe this bear was a little hungrier than usual." She explained that through the Climate change changing ocean currents, which could affect how far inland bears travel throughout the year. She also recommended storing waste safely to avoid attracting polar bears.

Behavior in the event of a polar bear attack

McCall stressed: "If you're attacked by a polar bear, definitely don't play dead - that's a myth. Fight as long as you can."
