Krampus in danger: Aggressive spectators injure several participants!
The Advent season is overshadowed by a worrying wave of attacks on Krampus. In the last few days, four Krampus were attacked during parades in Moosburg and Spittal an der Drau. The most serious incident occurred on Sunday when a 24-year-old participant from the Völkermarkt district was brutally grabbed by his horns by an unknown perpetrator and lost consciousness. He was admitted to the Klagenfurt Clinic and remains stable there, reports ORF Carinthia. Another incident, which occurred shortly after the first, involved a 55-year-old man damaging an 18-year-old's mask by pulling on the horns until one broke off.
Increasing aggressiveness towards Krampus
An alarming pattern emerges at the Krampus parades: the aggressiveness of the spectators increases. This year, five Krampus have already been injured, including two teenagers. “The aggressiveness of people towards the Krampus has increased significantly,” says 20-year-old Laura Zikulnig from the Seenteufeln Keutschach, and that shocks not only the activists, but also the police. This registers a new phenomenon and is therefore forced to monitor the moves more closely. Despite the measures taken, the Krampus remain worried. “It's like a wave of provocation, and nobody knows what will happen next,” adds Isabel Koller from the Sea Devils. In order to protect the Krampus and maintain the tradition, the police will have to be even more present in the future.
As the incidents in Moosburg and Spittal show, one perpetrator remains unknown, while another has already been identified and is being reported. These aggressive encounters not only reflect poorly on the tradition, but also seriously endanger the safety of participants. “We are alarmed and have to think seriously about our security,” concludes 17-year-old Jan-Pascal Zimpernig from the Krampus group Suetschach, while the tradition should not be given up despite all the unrest, as reported sn.at.
