Grandmother disappeared: search for woman in huge hole in the ground!
In the US state of Pennsylvania, a 64-year-old woman, Elizabeth Pollard, is being desperately sought after she may have fallen into a suddenly opened hole while searching for her lost cat. Pollard had parked her car outside a restaurant in Marguerite on Monday evening to look for the cat, named Pepper. Armed with a good dose of courage and a big heart, she was in the immediate vicinity of the hole when she was last seen. Her five-year-old granddaughter, who was sleeping in the car at the time, was later found safe and sound, giving the family a glimmer of hope. Police were alerted after the family became concerned at 1am on Tuesday that the grandmother was not returning.
The mystery of the hole in the ground
As they continued their search, the emergency services came across a hole in the ground about the size of a manhole cover, which probably serves as the entrance to an old mining shaft. These shaft caves are a suspected remnant of the historic coal mining that shaped the region. The hole is approximately ten meters deep and expands beneath the surface of the earth. According to police, it may have come up when Elizabeth Pollard was looking for her cat. “It appears as if the hole opened as she stood on it,” said Steve Limani, a police spokesman Berliner Kurier reported.
The search operation is challenging, but the rescue teams are doing everything they can to find the missing woman. More than 100 emergency services, including specialists with cameras and listening devices, are searching the hole. Something that looks like a shoe was spotted on a video image. Despite the low temperatures at night, conditions in the shaft were relatively stable, with sufficient oxygen and higher temperatures than on the surface. Nevertheless, Elizabeth Pollard's fate remains uncertain, while the danger posed by the hole at the time also points to the absence of her cat. “There is no trace of the cat either,” reported crown, which makes the situation even more dramatic.
