Around 9:30 p.m., concerned calls from passers -by at Kapaunplatz, who had noticed the suspect in a threatening state. The police moved in with a large contingent, including units from Wega, Cobra and service dog units. The situation escalated when the man fled to his nearby apartment after the first confrontations. He was armed with a long weapon that resembled a replica of an AK47 and addressed them on the incoming civil servants, as reported by Kurier.at

A toxicological examination was ordered to clarify whether the man was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident. The identity of the man turned out to be a 39-year-old Austrian. The State Criminal Police Office has started the investigation and the man's motif remains unclear.
