Explosion in Vienna: Police in large-scale operation - man shot!
A dramatic police operation raged in Vienna's Klausgasse when a 47-year-old Serb allegedly threw objects out of his window and then barricaded himself in his apartment. The police alert resulted in a largely closed operational area as a large response team, including the elite Cobra task force, arrived on the scene. According to reports from the Pulse24 The emergency led to an explosion that injured several officers, while the aggressor apparently fired blank shots.
The situation escalated when contact with the man failed. Residents reported shots fired, and eyewitnesses later discovered that the man was defending himself with a blank pistol. Seven officers were ultimately injured in the operation, while the Serb was shot by the Cobra as he tried to escape after the explosion. An autopsy should clarify whether he died from the explosion or from gunfire. “At the moment it is unclear whether he was armed,” an LKA official explained in a press conference ORF Salzburg reported.
Explosion sequence and evacuation
The explosion in Ottakring was caused by a likely gas incident after police stormed into the apartment. During the incident, the blast wave was described as so strong that almost the entire building had to be evacuated. “It is almost a miracle that there were no more serious injuries or additional fatalities,” said a criminalist. The professional fire brigade was on duty to take over safety measures while the city of Vienna checked the area for damage.
In a separate incident, the 24-year-old from Salzburg accidentally injured himself while cleaning his legally owned handgun, with one shot going into a wall. The weapon as well as another and several hundred rounds of ammunition were taken from him.
