A spectacular incident in Wernigerode is attracting attention: On Tuesday evening, December 17, 2024, there was a dramatic collision between a car and a Harz narrow-gauge railway train on the narrow Kirchstrasse. As the police report, the crash occurred when a 63-year-old driver was on his way towards Papental and the train suddenly came towards him. In order to avoid a collision, the driver had the presence of mind to swerve, but underestimated the width of the train, which led to the serious accident. Fortunately, there were no injuries, neither to the driver nor to the passengers of the train MDR reported.

But the material damage is considerable: the damage to the car cost around 10,000 euros and the locomotive cost around 1,000 euros. The scene is reminiscent of a film, as the Harz narrow-gauge railway is considered a real landmark of the region. Especially on narrow streets like Kirchstrasse, drivers and the historic steam locomotives often have to share the same space - a potentially dangerous scenario. Despite the mild outcome, the driver has no choice but to learn from this expensive encounter, while the narrow-gauge railway will continue to make its rounds in Wernigerode, reported News38.
