Bomb threat to TU Vienna: Large police presence and evacuation!

On June 12, 2025, the Vienna University of Technology on the Freihaus campus on Wiedner Hauptstrasse was the target of a large police presence. The reason for this was a bomb threat that was triggered by an incident in which a man threw a package into a building and shouted: "It's about to go boom." As a result of this threat, the police were immediately alerted after a security employee recognized the situation. Police spokeswoman Anna Gutt confirmed the incident to the APA.

The police arrived with numerous emergency services, including the special operations group from the Vienna professional rescue service. Explosives-savvy teams and explosives dogs were deployed to check the package, which initially remained in the building. Public traffic in the Karlsplatz area was also closed to ensure safety and not to hinder the emergency services.

Evacuation and investigation

During the course of the operation, the affected building was completely evacuated and searched. An inspection of the package on Thursday afternoon revealed that no explosives were found inside. The traffic closures in the area were then lifted. However, it was unclear whether the man who threw the package fled or went into the building itself.

The Directorate of State Security and Intelligence Services (DSN) is now investigating this case and other bomb threats. There are currently indications of an international group of perpetrators who may be behind such threats. In the last three days, more than 50 bomb threats, mostly at schools, have been registered.

The phenomenon may be related to “swatting,” a term that refers to the triggering of large-scale operations through false emergency calls. Investigations also suggest that some threatening letters may have been written by artificial intelligence. The Interior Ministry has emphasized that bomb threats are not a petty crime and perpetrators face heavy penalties.
