Vienna votes: KPÖ and LEFT united for a future worth living!

The upcoming elections in Vienna are experiencing new dynamics thanks to a strong alliance between the KPÖ and the LINKS party. Barbara Urbanic, who has been the state spokeswoman for the KPÖ since the end of 2024, leads the alliance together with Angelika Adensamer, who is running in second place and is the spokeswoman for LINKS. Both parties already fought together in the Vienna elections in 2020 and are currently active in 15 district councils with a total of 23 mandates. Urbanic emphasized that it is important to combine left-wing forces to bring about positive changes in the city. “In times like these, the commitment to a city worth living in for everyone in Vienna is more important than ever,” said Adensamer in a press conference.

Election campaign and challenges

The cooperation between the KPÖ and the LINKS will be strongly focused in the election on April 27th. The alliance will appear on the ballot paper under the short name KPÖ and in the long name KPÖ and LINKS – Communist Party of Austria and LINKS Vienna. In order for the parties to take part in the election, they need over 2,000 certified declarations of support, which are already being worked on intensively. Urbanic reported that there has already been a large return of signatures and many people have expressed interest in joining the alliance ORF Vienna.

In addition to the political debate, the city of Vienna is faced with an urgent challenge: the climate crisis. Activists are calling for a radical change in climate policy that is based on reality. They emphasize that the current economic system, focused on maximizing profits, is the main cause of environmental pollution. “We have to produce CO2-neutrally and without profit orientation,” demand the activists, and emphasize the need to consistently implement the phase-out of fossil fuels. The unequal distribution of the impacts of the climate crisis is a key issue, with the rich, who contribute the most to the crisis, suffering the least from its consequences links.vienna.
