Greens rely on new trams: Vienna is becoming mobile again!
On Wednesday, the Vienna Greens presented their ambitious plans for expanding public transport in the city. In a presentation, top candidate Judith Pühringer emphasized that the tram network should grow by a third over the next ten years. A total of 17 new tram lines and an extension of nine existing lines are planned, which requires an investment of between 1.7 and 2 billion euros. Pühringer explained that the tram is a “quick to build” and “relatively inexpensive” means of transport that, above all, is easily accessible to everyone. These measures are intended to help reduce the proportion of car trips in the city to 20 percent by 2025, as Pühringer said in the conversation MyDistrict emphasized.
Election campaign and challenges
At the same time, the Greens also presented their first wave of posters for the upcoming local council elections. According to Pühringer, the city has remained “pretty pale” over the last five years and it is now time to take new initiatives. With the slogan “Vienna, only courage,” the Greens not only want to draw attention to the expansion of public transport, but also address key issues such as affordable housing. The slogan “Too expensive at home” represents the party’s activism in relation to the pressing housing problem. crown reports that Pühringer and her colleagues promise to actively fight against overpriced rental prices and Airbnb.
However, the political climate is tense. Opponents, such as the SPÖ's second on the list, Peter Kraus, are of the opinion that the Social Democrats will win the election anyway, which poses a massive challenge to the Greens. The KPÖ and the LINKS initiative are also sending clear signals by placing issues such as affordable housing and social justice at the center of their election campaigns. Despite the current difficulties in public transport, including staff shortages and delays, the Greens' focus remains unwavering on a future-oriented public transport infrastructure that will meet the needs of Viennese people for a better and more accessible means of transport.
