Greens rely on new trams: Vienna is becoming mobile again!

On Wednesday, the Viennese Greens presented their ambitious plans for the expansion of public transport in the city. In a presentation, the top candidate Judith Pühringer emphasized that the tram network should grow by a third over the next ten years. A total of 17 new tram lines and a route extension of nine existing lines are sought, which requires an investment between 1.7 and 2 billion euros. Pühringer explained that the tram is a “quick building” and “relatively inexpensive” means of transport, which is particularly easily accessible to all people. These measures should help to reduce the proportion of car journeys in the city to 20 percent by 2025, such as Pühringer in the conversation with emphasized.

election campaign and challenges

At the same time, the Greens also presented their first poster wave for the upcoming municipal council election. According to Pühringer, the city had remained “quite pale” in the past five years, and it was now time to take new initiatives. With the slogan "Vienna, only courage", the Greens not only want to draw attention to the expansion of public transport, but also want to tackle central issues such as affordable living. The postered motto "Too expensive at home" stands for the party's activism in relation to the pressing residential problem.
Krone reports that Pühringer and her colleagues promise to actively fight against the overpriced rental prices and Airbnb.

The political climate is tense. Opponents, such as the SPÖ list of list, Peter Kraus, believe that the Social Democrats will win the election anyway, which presents the Greens with a massive challenge. The KPÖ and the Links initiative also set clear signs by also focusing on topics such as affordable living and social justice at the center of their election campaigns. Despite the current difficulties in public transport, including personnel bottlenecks and delays, the focus of the Greens remains unshakable on a future -oriented, public transport infrastructure, which should satisfy the needs of the Viennese for a better and achievable means of transportation.
