Wolves in Tyrol: Launge regulation according to cattle attacks!

In the Tyrolean district of Kitzbühel, the situation has been tense in the past few days: The state government has issued a shooting regulation for a wolf, which was considered to be damaged, after a dead beef and four injured cattle were discovered in an alpine area in Fieberbrunn. According to the report of Exxpress.at one of the injured cattle must be added. The official veterinarian found that a wolf could be involved in this incident, which led to the regulation that came into force last Friday and was valid for eight weeks.

The regulation concerns a radius of ten kilometers around the scene. At the same time, a wolf, which was also considered dangerous in the Imst district, was killed.

expanded shooting regulation

The launch regulation was not only extended to the Kitzbühel district. Cases of wolves were also reported in other areas of Tyrol, such as in the Kelchsau (municipality of Hopfgarten) and in the Sperental (municipality of Kirchberg i. T.). Four injured cattle were checked in the Kelchsau in official veterinarian, with suspicion of wolf participation again. Another dead beef was found in the region. The Tyrolean state government has now expanded the shooting regulation to hunting areas in the districts of Kufbühel, Kufstein and Schwaz, such as tirol.gv.at reported.

This year, around 350 pasture animals were killed, missed or injured by large prey animals such as wolves in Tyrol. This number comprises 170 dead and 170 missing animals. The hunting pressure seems to have an impact on the growing wolf population in Tyrol, which rose by a third in 2023. A total of at least 25 different wolves were identified in Tyrol, and the state government sees no indication of a pack formation.

wolves and herd protection

The state of Tyrol has already issued 19 shooting regulations against less harmless wolves, four of which were met. This year, pilot projects for herd protection will also be supported with a funding of 444,000 euros to protect the pasture animals. Although the losses of pasture animals decreased somewhat in 2023, the situation remains tense. According to the statistics, 255 deaths and 285 missing grazing animals were assigned to large -scale gross animals, of which 75% were wolves. The compensation for livestock cracks amounted to over 160,000 euros, which, however, represents a decrease of 43% compared to the previous year.

The Tyrolean state government also campaigns for a reduction in the wolf's protection status in the Bern Convention and calls for regular hunting. This could be a reaction to the increasing number of wolf attacks and the associated damage to agriculture.

Comprehensive information on the current situation of the large -scale predator in Tyrol, including wolves, bears and gold jackals, are available on the website of the Tyrolean state government. The annual report on the situation of large-scale predators will be published on February 5, 2024, such as tirol.gv.at summarizes.
