Vienna Wine Prize 2025: Mayor honors the city's top winemakers!
This year's event took place on June 4, 2025 in the arcade courtyard of the Vienna City Hall Vienna Wine Prize 2025 instead of. Mayor Michael Ludwig honored 13 award winners who distinguished themselves through outstanding achievements in Viennese viticulture. This event aims to underline the importance of Viennese viticulture and demonstrate the quality of the wines produced there.
A total of 26 finalists presented their wines at a special wine bar. The focus was on the 2024 vintage, which presented the winemakers with numerous challenges, but was also of high quality. The 2024 wines are known for their ripeness, fruitiness and fresh, digestible acidity.
Award for the national winners
The event highlighted the outstanding wines of Viennese winemakers. Loud Viennese wine 406 wines were submitted, of which 259 were awarded a gold medal. Rainer Christ from Jedlersdorf shone at this year's award ceremony and won three of a total of 16 state champion titles. His award-winning wines include:
- Grüner Veltliner Bisamberg 2023
- Lagenriesling 2023 von der Ried Zwerchbreiteln
- Rotweincuvée XXI vom Jahrgang 2020
Other award winners were Peter Bernreiter from Mayer am Pfarrplatz and Kroiss, who each received two awards. Bernreiter was known for his wines, including theGrüner Veltliner strongand thePinot Blanc, honored. Kroiss received awards for theRiesling Ried Hackenberg “Julia”and theVienna Mixed Set DAC Ried Mitterberg.
Challenges of the class of 2023
Although the 2023 vintage presented winemakers with numerous challenges, the quality of the harvest was good. The weather pattern was characterized by low rainfall in winter and a cool spring, followed by a hot and dry summer, which was affected by hailstorms. Nevertheless, the dry autumn enabled an optimal harvest time.
The high number of gold medals awarded this year demonstrates the excellent quality of the wines. A total of 64 companies took part and of the 406 samples submitted, 82 finalists were chosen. Statistics Austria also documents continuous surveys in Austrian viticulture, which provide structural information about the number of companies, their size structure, vineyard areas as well as the grape varieties and the age of the vines.
Vienna's wine culture, which is considered the city's flagship, is further strengthened through the commitment of young winemakers and innovative initiatives such as REBENTANZ. Wine queen Katharina Beranek praised the enthusiasm and commitment of the winemakers, which contribute to the popularity of Viennese wine and its first-class quality.
