Vienna Climate Team: Here you can contribute your ideas for the climate in 2025!

The Vienna climate team continues to campaign for a better climate in the city's neighborhoods. With the start of the fourth round in autumn 2025, the Josefstadt and Penzing districts will come into focus. This project follows successful implementation in nine districts and offers residents the opportunity to contribute their ideas for climate-friendly measures. Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky emphasizes the importance of fighting together against the climate crisis and inviting everyone living in Vienna to take part.

Ideas can be submitted from autumn 2025, and the climate team will focus particularly on mediation work and outreach formats. The aim is to also reach less committed citizens and obtain their opinions. Particular attention is paid to measures to reduce heat, reuse resources and save energy.

Previous successes and citizen juries

Over the last three years, over 4,000 ideas have been received, of which 282 projects have been implemented in various districts. The projects to be implemented are selected by citizen juries made up of representative residents. So far, 53 projects have been recommended for implementation, and the juries for districts 9, 12 and 15 are currently meeting to evaluate the new proposals. The selected projects will be presented to the public at the end of June 2025.

The climate team, which started as a pilot project in the Margareten, Simmering and Ottakring districts in 2022, has now developed significantly. In 2023, the districts of Mariahilf, Währing and Floridsdorf were added. The initiative has a budget of around 20 euros per district resident for the implementation of the projects.

Ideas for sustainable development

A key aspect of the project is the promotion of ideas about climate-friendly mobility, renewable energies and sustainable design of public spaces. The award ceremony for winning projects is planned for November 2023 and December 2023. Examples of successful projects from previous years include greening facades, organizing a climate day and improving bicycle connections.

In a broader context, dealing with unused brownfield sites and buildings in need of renovation is also of great importance. According to a position paper from associations such as the ZIA and others, reactivating such areas is essential in order to reduce land consumption and achieve climate goals. The cooperation between politics, municipalities and the real estate industry, as well as the involvement of civil society, is seen as crucial. Such initiatives not only contribute to climate protection, but also stop the loss of biological diversity and promote water protection.
