New bridge near Vienna: Inzell and Hammer again connected

The new bridge near Vienna on the connection line between Inzell and Hammer has finally been opened. After months of construction work, which were faced with numerous delays and challenges, pedestrians and cyclists can use the new crossing without restrictions. The completion of this bridge cost a total of 600,000 euros, and there were several unforeseen hurdles during the construction process.

The start of construction took place immediately after the Easter holidays on April 8, 2024. It was originally planned to complete the new building the previous year, but the intensive planning work and detailed statics and reports asked for more thorough preparation. During the demolition work, it turned out unexpectedly that the surface was in a questionable condition under the stream bed. This required deeper excavations and additional bored piles, which further confused the schedule.

challenges during the construction work

One of the greatest difficulties during the project was the risk of floods. During the construction phase there were a total of heavy rains, especially in September, which was almost at risk of the crane. "Thanks to targeted measures, we were able to avert major damage," explains construction manager Hansjörg Mayer. Despite these problems, the construction site was also a delicate point because it was located directly on the popular cycle and hiking trail between Inzell and Hammer. In order to avoid accidents, a comprehensive barrier was necessary, which led to intensive conversations with cyclists who tried to get over the construction site.

The new bridge was extended by one meter and increased by 30 centimeters, which should no longer cause any problems even with possible floods. Large natural stone walls were built in order to make the street connection stable and visually appealing. This guarantees that the bridge can be used for many more years without weight restriction. Telekom also took the opportunity to lay a fiber optic cable and a new power line.

Mayor Michael Lorenz praised the cooperation with the companies involved and above all the performance of the executing company Mayer from Ruhpolding. "Communication was excellent and we had a pleasant partner," emphasized Lorenz. Sepp Eder, the construction manager of Inzell, also confirmed that despite the challenges, the agreements would have worked well, which was crucial for the course of the construction site.

The municipality of Inzell can look forward to support of 277,000 euros by the government of Upper Bavaria, which contributes to keeping the costs under control. The bridge is now fully functional again and represents an important connection between Inzell and Hammer, which is of great importance for both residents and tourists.
