Trial begins: 17-year-old accused of rape in Vienna parking garage

In a shocking case, a trial began on Tuesday at the Vienna Regional Court for Criminal Matters, which revolves around a 17-year-old who is accused of raping a 12-year-old girl in a parking garage. This hearing caused a wave of outrage among the public and the media.

On March 19, there were reports of the incident in which the girl was reportedly forced into sexual acts by a group of youths over a long period of time. This case has affected not only the family involved, but also the entire country. The 17-year-old is on trial as the alleged main perpetrator because, according to the prosecution, he is said to have committed the crime in a parking garage in Favoriten between January and February.

Details of the charges and other allegations

In addition to rape, the teenager also faces other allegations. The public prosecutor's office accuses him of "alienating non-cash means of payment" and "fraudulent misuse of data processing". Credit card details were found on his smartphone, which may have been stored without the owners' consent.

The case is not new, as another young person from the same group was charged by the Vienna public prosecutor's office in September. The 17-year-old is the second defendant in this serious matter. According to media reports, the two met in the park in early 2023 and exchanged Snapchat names before being invited to another meeting that had tragic consequences.

The hearing took place under the strictest security precautions, as there is a ban on photos and videos in the courtroom to protect the privacy of everyone involved.

In this context, it is important to mention the existing offers of help for women and girls affected by violence. Emergency numbers are available around the clock in Vienna, including the 24-hour women's emergency number on 01/12 345 and the women's helpline on 0800/222 555. In acutely dangerous situations, it is advisable to contact the police on 133 or 112.
