Junge Theater Vienna: Culture for the next generation in the districts

With his new “Junge Theater Vienna” project,

Stephan Rabl has launched an initiative to make art and culture more accessible to the younger generation of the Viennese population. This brave project will start in five outdoor districts of Vienna in November and offers entertaining opportunities to get to know and participate.

In the outskirts of Vienna, such as Floridsdorf, Donaustadt, Simmering, Favorites and Liesing, the "Junge Theater Vienna" should be a platform, especially for young people between the ages of two and 22, to get in touch with various cultural offers. "The young theaters should bring together the young population on site and create a room for exchange," said Rabl. This illustrates how important the integration of the youth is into the art scene.

cultural access for all

The project aims to pay special attention to the outdoor districts, since around 43 percent of the Viennese population live here, which corresponds to more than 850,000 people. This diversity sought a decentralized theater company, which facilitates access to culture in the immediate vicinity and creates new placement options.

The kick-off events for the "Junge Theater Wien" initiative take place on five different days in November. At these festivals, Rabl, the City Councilor Veronica Kaup-Hasler and the respective district leaders will present the concept. These starting festivals start at 5:30 p.m.:

  • 8. November - Young Theater Favorites in the Kulturhaus Brotfabrik
  • 13. November - Young Theater Simmering in the Neubauen Castle
  • 14. November - Young Theater Floridsdorf in the Kulturankerzentrum Schlingermarkt
  • 22. November - Young Theater Donaustadt in the cultural arise
  • 28. November - Young Theater Liesing in F23 - We.Fabriken

Although the starting festivals are the start, the project aims to offer regular performances in the districts later in spring 2025. The official opening of the regular game season is then planned for autumn 2025. Around 40 productions and 200 performances are planned that will offer a wide range of events.

The artistic offer will be varied and ranges from theater, dance and music theater to figure theater and modern circus. Special formats for events and interdisciplinary performances are also considered to make the theater accessible to a broad target group.
