Traffic turnaround on the Brenner: Luegbrücke became a single-track route in 2025
An important infrastructure project is imminent that will affect many drivers and truck drivers. The Luegbrücke on the Brenner motorway, which was opened in 1968, will only be accessible for six months from January 2025. This was communicated by ASFINAG, the state motorway operator. The building, which is almost two kilometers long, already shows signs of age, because the steel is attacked by road salt.
The planned changes are due to the results of a main test of the bridge. "The one-lane will be the regular traffic routing on the Lueg Bridge to ensure security," says Asfinag Managing Director Stefan Siegele.
construction work and traffic management
There will be special regulations for the duration of the single -lane. On days with high traffic, such as during the summer vacation, two -lane traffic will be possible, with trucks driving in the middle of the bridge and placing on the supports. This was tested in summer and the results were positive. The traffic control will be a special challenge: vehicles over 3.5 tons have to drive on the left, while special automatic scales in the right lane ensure that heavier vehicles are identified and excavated.
The exact data for the new travel rules will soon be determined, in coordination with the state of Tyrol and the Ministry of Transport in Vienna. The aim is to ensure traffic safety during the construction work.
regional effects and measures
In response to the expected traffic problems, measures to relieve residents were decided. In addition to the more intensive use of the rolling country road, ASFINAG also plans to install seven additional barriers to control access traffic and avoid traffic jams. These security measures are realized with an investment of twelve million euros, while 15 additional truck driving ban, which only enables Austrian trucks.
Individual test measures have already caused a sensation this year, including an unforeseen driving ban, which led to a 110 -kilometer traffic jam on the day of German unity. Soon, from October 7th, there will be the first preparatory work on the Lueg Bridge, which could temporarily influence the traffic situation.
With the comprehensive renovation and the long -term new construction of the Lueg Bridge, the completion of which is to be expected at the earliest in 2030, those responsible hope for a sustainable improvement in the traffic infrastructure on the Brenner. But the residents are decisive against the new building and demand solutions that are less disturbing for the region. It remains to be seen how the dispute over the bridge continues and which compromises can be found.
