Art against war: New graffiti in the Arena Vienna makes a statement
There is new graffiti in the city of Vienna that draws attention to an urgent issue. On Monday, October 7th, an expressive work of art was unveiled on the front facade of the Arena Vienna administration building. It sends a clear message: “Killer robots must be banned as quickly as possible!” This creative campaign comes from the “Campaign to Stop Killer Robots” initiative and aims to shed light on the dangers of autonomous weapon systems.
Autonomous weapon systems (AWS) are machines that can operate without human intervention and are capable of attacking targets independently. This is made possible by advances in technology, particularly artificial intelligence. According to the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, such developments have a significant impact on society and the use of technology in our everyday lives.
The message of graffiti
Marit Seyer, the chairwoman of the “Campaign to Stop Killer Robots Austria” association, comments on the problem: “From smart homes and targeted advertising to the use of robot dogs by the police, artificial intelligence technologies and automated decision-making play an important role in our lives today.” With this initiative, the association would like to address the legal and ethical issues surrounding the use of AI and autonomous warfare in order to raise awareness in society.
The idea for graffiti wasn't born overnight. Such creative forms of expression and the cause of the “Campaign to Stop Killer Robots” have been with people for a long time. There was previously a similar campaign near the Prater, which received a positive response. After the project was approved by Arena Vienna, the graffiti was realized on Landstrasse.
The work was artistically designed by “deadbeathero” and implemented with the support of the Austrian Red Cross and Amnesty International Austria. This collaboration shows how diverse organizations pull together to convey a meaningful message through art.
The unveiling of the graffiti is intended not only to highlight 21st century technology, but also to the urgent debates about ethical boundaries and legal regulations when dealing with such weapon systems. With this creative campaign, the association hopes to send a strong message against the potential of cool robot weapons and to encourage society to think.
