Florian Wunsch: Speech on the importance of eastern expansion in the EU Parliament

As part of a special event in Europe, Florian Wunsch, the district councilor from Josefstadt, gave a remarkable speech in the EU Parliament. He began with a provocative question: “Where would we be today if we hadn’t enlarged to the east in 2004?” These considerations underline the far-reaching positive effects that enlargement can have for both sides - the new states and the existing Union.

Strengthen networking and collaboration

Wunsch particularly emphasized the advantages that not only the new members have experienced, but also the neighboring regions. As a result of eastward expansion, Vienna has once again moved more into the center of the European continent. The district council spoke about the intensive exchange that took place and continues to exist between the regions. A concrete example of this is the Twin City Liner, which has been bringing Vienna and Bratislava closer together since 2006 and thus establishing direct contact.

Of course, the expansion also presented challenges. Wunsch noted that the EU is committed to upholding the rule of law in its member states, which is crucial for the cohesion and integrity of the union. Nevertheless, he emphasizes that without the ten new member states, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, the Union would not be the same as we know it today. These countries make a crucial contribution to the diversity and stability of the European Community.

Wunsch's speech made it clear that eastern expansion is much more than just a political event. It symbolizes cohesion within the EU and the possibility of mutual support and development. The positive assessment he drew shows that this political-strategic decision was beneficial not only for the accession countries at the time, but also for the entire European family.
