Subway surfers in Vienna: life-threatening accident at Schönbrunn train station
In Vienna-Hietzing, a tragic incident changed the lives of two young men. A 17-year-old and an 18-year-old are fighting for their survival in hospital after they were seriously injured during so-called "subway surfing" on Tuesday afternoon. According to statements from the Vienna General Hospital and the Meidling Accident Hospital, the two teenagers are still in a “life-threatening condition”.
The accident occurred when the two young people climbed onto the roof of a U4 train together with a 16-year-old, who only suffered minor injuries, and a 13-year-old, who was completely uninjured. During their daring action, they crashed into a pedestrian bridge at Schönbrunn station, causing the two older boys to suffer serious injuries.
Dangerous subway surfing
The group, which also included two Czechs, had used the accessible roof area of the train to “surf” on the journey shortly after 4 p.m. Unfortunately, the adventure ended abruptly: A video circulating on the Internet shows the young men posing for the camera immediately before colliding with the bridge. The clip ends heartbreakingly with the injured teenagers lying on the train after the impact.
The situation inevitably raises questions about public transport safety and makes us think about the dangers of risky actions that are often viewed by young people as brave or exciting. In this case, the search for thrills has had tragic consequences. The incident goes far beyond personal tragedies and also raises the issue of society's role in preventing such dangerous activities.
