GAK 1902: There is no victory - analysis after the defeat in Vienna
The newly promoted GAK 1902 is still waiting for its first win in the ADMIRAL Bundesliga season 2024/25. After another defeat against FK Austria Wien with 1:2, the team from Graz remains without points in the current season. In this game, the Red Jackets were able to keep up well after the equalizer, but missed the chance to turn the game in their favor. A penalty and an unfortunate own goal from captain Lukas Graf finally sealed the defeat against the violets.
With a total of 18 goals conceded, GAK 1902 has conceded the most goals this season. Goalkeeper Jakob Meierhofer was powerless to score the two goals in Vienna, which were only scored by a penalty and an own goal. The Graz team go into the international break with this frustrating result before they have to play in the explosive city derby against SK Sturm Graz in October.
Reactions after defeat
Coach Gernot Messner expressed disappointment with his team's defensive performance: "If you look at the goals, it clearly depends on individual mistakes. If you defend like that, you can't win a game in the Bundesliga." He emphasized that the overall defensive work was good, but small mistakes in crucial moments set the team back.
The mood in the dressing room after the game was also tense. Captain Lukas Graf explained: "We scored 15 of the 17 goals we conceded. So it will be difficult this year." Despite the hard work the team puts in every day, they remain at the bottom of the table.
Benjamin Rosenberger, GAK full-back, made it clear: "We have shown what we stand for. There is always a foot in the way on the other side." He added that the international break now provides an opportunity to prepare for the big game ahead.
The look into the future
Expectations for the team are high, but managing director Boris Hüttenbrenner pointed out that the previous record of just four points after eight games was unacceptable. “We were hoping for something different but we have to deliver results in the coming games,” he said.
The question of how the team will get out of this crisis in results remains open. However, Gernot Messner remains optimistic and hopes for a positive turnaround after they have clearly shown what they can achieve.
The next city derby against SK Sturm Graz could already be the decisive moment to get the first win of the season. Whether they will finally be able to tread water or flip the switch remains to be seen and will require both individual and collective improvement.
