U-Bahn-U1: Massive changes & replacement traffic after fire
Because of a fire in the U1 subway line, public transport is severely restricted. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, November 19, which led to a massive standstill between Keplerplatz and Stephanplatz. U1 trains currently only drive between Oberlaa and Reumannplatz and from Schwedenplatz to Leopoldau.
The repair work on the track is extensive. In the next few days, 50 meters of track, 25 thresholds, 400 meters of cable cups and several kilometers of cables have to be replaced. Only after this work has been completed is a track measuring car used to check the tracks for millimeter accuracy. It is assumed that the continuous operation of the U1 can be resumed on Friday, November 29th.
replacement measures and diversions
In order to alleviate the effects of interruptions, various replacement measures were taken. The tram line D is extended to Reumannplatz and drives moved via Schwedenplatz and Franz-Josefs-Kai to ensure the traffic between the U1 stations in Schwedenplatz and Reumannplatz. Lines 1 and O can also be used alternatively. In order to cover the need in night traffic, the 13A is also reinforced. Night traffic U2Z does not end as usual at the opera or Karlsplatz, but is extended to Reumannplatz.
Another challenge concerns the U4, the trains of which until December 17 only drive at longer intervals. This is due to the necessary work on the bridge structure of the Alserbach Bridge, with only every second train to Heiligenstadt. In addition, the U2 is also only available between the Seestadt and Schottentor stations due to modernization work. The traffic between Schottentor and Karlsplatz is expected to be resumed until the end of 2024.
additional information and restrictions
On the U1, the Kagran station in the direction of Leopoldau will not be stopped until November 28th. Passengers who want to reach this station must switch to a move to the opposite direction on Kagraner Platz. This is intended to help travelers to remain mobile despite the extensive restrictions and still use relevant connections.
- The U1 is increasingly managed.
- Additional U2Z tram line is in use.
- lines D, 1, 2 and 71 are available as alternatives.
The situation is challenging, but everything is done to restore the subway connections as soon as possible. In view of the various measures and diversions, the transport companies hope for an early improvement and the return to normality in local public transport.
