SPAR in Vienna: Delivery bottleneck by dairy farmers - what does that mean for customers?
in Vienna there is currently a new delivery stop that affects the dairy products that are sold by the NÖM dairy. This step was deliberately initiated by the Lower Austria Milk Cooperative (MGN), as a result of conflicts on future prices for the delivered products. The MGN not only supplies the NÖM, but also many other supermarket chains, which makes the dependence of the Vienna supermarkets clear on agricultural deliveries from the surrounding federal states.
Most recently, Viennese customers had difficulty finding their usual products after flooding caused considerable damage to Lower Austria in September. During this time, the shelves, especially in the area of fruit and vegetables, were often empty. This new incident shows how vulnerable food supply seems to be. In the hope of avoiding similar bottlenecks, SPAR AG calms consumers.
not concerned about supply
Nicole Berkmann, spokeswoman for the savings chain, emphasizes that the approximately 170 savings, Eurospar and Interspar branches in Vienna are still well looked after. "There are no bottlenecks in other products. We are already receiving dairy products from other manufacturers from the region," she explains. This ensures that the own brands and other dairy products should continue to be available.
The MGN has made it clear that it only does not want to supply Spar, while other large retail chains were ready to accept the required price changes. The supermarket operator, on the other hand, sees himself in the position not to pass on the price increases to the end customers, as they do not consider this to be justified. Berkmann adds: "We are open to further discussions with the NÖM, but not with the MGN, since this is not our negotiating partner."
The current situation could mean for the Viennese households that they may be faced with a limited offer in the near future. It remains to be seen whether the differences between the farmers and the SPAR group will soon be clarified. More information is in an article on www.meinbezirk.at read.
In addition to these developments, the farmers' association in Lower Austria will examine legal steps in order to protect its interests in the ongoing discussion about milk prices and deliveries.
