Geothermal energy project deeep: groundbreaking heat supply for Vienna
An important project has begun in Vienna: The geothermal energy project “deep”, a collaboration between Wien Energie and OMV, is now in the implementation phase. This initiative is intended not only to diversify the city's energy supply, but also to make an important contribution to the use of renewable energy sources.
The drilling site is currently being prepared in Seestadt Aspern. An impressive 50 meter high drilling tower will be erected in the coming weeks with the aim of starting deep drilling in the winter. The planned drilling will go up to 3,400 meters underground and is expected to be completed by mid-2025. According to OMV expert Bernhard Novotny, the system will be able to provide district heating for around 20,000 households in Vienna from 2028.
Planned drilling and possible testing
The project initially calls for three drillings. If the drilling turns out to be successful, formation water will be pumped up from the deep layers. These water samples are examined to understand, among other things, the chemical composition of the water collected. After initial drilling and testing, the team plans to begin construction of the surface facility in 2026.
The planned system will achieve an impressive output of 20 megawatts and pump water hotter than 100 degrees to the surface. After passing through a heat exchanger to generate energy, the cooled water is returned via an injection well to the geothermal reservoir, where it is heated again. The entire process takes place in a closed circulation system, which further increases the efficiency of the additional energy.
Advanced plans for the future
Wien Energie and OMV have ambitious plans that go beyond the first drilling. In the future, several systems will be developed that could achieve a total capacity of around 200 megawatts. This could provide up to 200,000 households with environmentally friendly district heating. Up to seven deep geothermal energy plants are planned in Vienna, which will not only ensure an environmentally friendly energy supply, but will also play an important role in the fight against climate change.
The financing of this project is not only provided by private funds, but is also supported by public bodies, including the Ministry of Climate Change and the Climate and Energy Fund. It is a step in the right direction to promote sustainable energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
These developments in the article www.vienna.at described could fundamentally change the picture of energy supply in Vienna.
