Three arrests after robberies in Lower Austria and Vienna

Police have arrested three men suspected of being involved in robberies in Austria and other countries. The main suspect, a 20-year-old Czech, confessed that, among other things, he had committed an attack on a jeweler in Lower Austria. According to the Lower Austria State Police Directorate, the young man entered the shop in Haugsdorf (Hollabrunn district) on September 18, 2023 at around 5:30 p.m. and threatened the owner with a silver blank pistol. He fled with cash and jewelry.

Complications arose on the same day when he robbed a money exchange office in Vienna-Brigittenau shortly before 7 p.m. During this attack, a threatened employee pressed the alarm button and hid in the toilet area. Fortunately, he managed to escape without taking any prey. The young man's arrest came the next day after another robbery at a jewelry store in Freiberg, Germany, where the blank pistol was seized.

Detention and further investigation

The 20-year-old has now been sentenced to several years in prison in Germany and is being held in Regis-Breitingen Prison. He is waiting to be extradited to Austria. His two accomplices, a 32-year-old and a 38-year-old, were arrested in the Czech Republic and taken to Austria. In contrast to the main suspect, they made no confessions when questioned and refused to give statements.

The police pointed out that all three suspects can be assigned to the drug milieu and there is evidence of previous crimes and convictions. It is believed that some of the loot may have been used to finance their drug procurement. This also explains why the suspects are under further investigation into property and robbery offenses in several countries - including Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland - underscoring the international implications of this case.

The arrest and the background to these robberies shine a spotlight on cross-border crimes, which can also endanger security in individual regions. More information on this topic is available the article on www.vol.at.
