Vienna in the fast lane: 75% of the paths climate -friendly!

In Vienna, more and more people are relying on environmentally friendly mobility. According to a current mobility survey, which was commissioned by the city of Vienna and the Vienna lines, 75 percent of the Viennese now trace their ways back. Public transport leads the list of preferred means of transportation with 34 percent, closely followed by giving it to foot at 30 percent. Cycling also has a remarkable increase and is now 11 percent. In return, car traffic fell to 25 percent, which has been the lowest value since the beginning of the surveys in 1993 when the proportion was still 40 percent, such as OE24.at reported.

This positive trend when cycling is not only due to the awareness of the population for environmentally friendly options, but also to the expansion of the cycling infrastructure. In 2024, an increase of over half a million cyclists will be registered compared to 2023. The proportion of paths covered by bike has increased from seven to eleven percent since 2019. Mobility City Councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) emphasizes the investments in safe and comfortable bike paths, which facilitate everyday cycling. The positive development of the use of public transport also supports the strategy of increasing the quality of life in Vienna by promoting modern equipment and the expansion of existing routes, according to Wiener lines Managing Director Alexandra Reinagl. This ensures that the Viennese is increasingly environmentally friendly and comfortable to the goal, such as meindezirk.at further reports.

The result of these developments reflects the extensive efforts of the city to revolutionize mobility. Over 90 percent of the users of public transport reach their stops on foot, which makes it clear, how closely pedestrian and public transport are linked. This continuous collection of mobility behavior not only shows a current picture of traffic use in Vienna, but also serves as the basis for the future planning and improvement of the traffic infrastructure.
