New city district at the northwest station: Vienna sets standards for sustainability!
The former site of the northwest station in Vienna, a 44 hectare area, will be converted into a modern, climate -friendly city district in the coming years. The city of Vienna and the ÖBB create the basis for sustainable urban development, which is to offer space for around 16,000 future residents and 4,700 jobs. In the first construction phase, around 900 subsidized apartments will be built, including 500 community apartments that are geared towards European architectural inputs. Vice Mayor Kathrin Gaál emphasizes that innovative and resource -saving construction methods are implemented for the future in order to meet the increasing demands on sustainable living.
a new city quarters for everyone
The new city district will not only offer living space, but also integrate important social infrastructures such as educational institutions and spacious green areas. The planning includes competitions for an educational campus as well as green and open spaces that are to be taken into account. The educational campus is scheduled to go into operation in 2028. The implementation of the first phase, which is already planned in 2024, will bring great upheavals. A final decision for the environmental impact assessment is already available and the demolition work of the old area is in full swing, with the aim of completing everything until 2028, such as wien.gv.at
In the heart of the new quarter, a “green center” is created - a 10 hectare open space that not only serves the ecological requirements, but should also act as a meeting place for the residents. Based on the principles of the circular economy, the construction concept will be designed to protect raw materials and minimize waste. Materials are to be taken into account when planning, which can also be recycled. This innovative approach is viewed as a prototype for sustainable building in Vienna, according to those responsible.
