Free learning aid: Viennese families get started!
A new, free program called “School Understanding – German and more” started in Vienna on February 12, 2025 and was developed specifically for newly immigrated families. This offer combines language support for parents and children with practical orientation in everyday school life and is intended to support the entire family. Vice Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr emphasizes the importance of access to education: “Education is the key – but only if everyone has access to it.” This initiative is intended not only to help schools, but also to strengthen educational opportunities and social cohesion in the city wien.gv.at reported.
Cross-generational learning and course offerings
The program is aimed at students from Vienna's primary schools, middle schools and lower secondary schools as well as their parents. While the children receive German learning help, the adults practice the language at the same time and learn important information about the Austrian school system. A total of 22 courses are offered per semester, which can accommodate up to 330 people at once. In addition to language support, the parent courses also provide information about topics such as school organization and learning materials. This happens at the same location, but in different courses - a real highlight for intergenerational learning, which is intended to ensure a stronger basis for educational success wien.gv.at highlights.
In addition to this new program, Wiener Lernhilfe offers free tutoring for around 10,000 students annually in German, mathematics and English, divided into small groups with a maximum of ten participants. In addition to the face-to-face courses, there are also over 100 online courses that take place weekly. At the learning stations of the adult education centers (VHS), students can receive support with questions about the learning material without having to register in advance. These offers are a valuable help for students and their parents in order to better meet the educational challenges in Vienna.
