Climate-friendly forecourt: New green oases on the S-Bahn-Breitensee!

The groundbreaking ceremony for the climate-friendly redesign of the forecourt of the Breitensee S-Bahn station in Penzing took place on April 16, 2025. Vienna City Gardens will redesign the area of 2,550 m². The measure aims to install 33 new trees and lots of greenery to provide cooling, which is of great importance given the urban heating caused by climate change. The redesign of the forecourt is part of a larger concept that is intended to improve the quality of stay for citizens.

A planned part of the redesign is a water basin with a drinking fountain and water jets, which is also intended for playful use. In addition, two calisthenics stations and three fitness machines will be installed to make the space attractive for sporting activities. Numerous seating areas, including four wooden platforms and two seating islands, ensure comfort and invite you to linger.

Funding program “Livable Climate Model City”

This project is part of the “Livable Climate Model City” funding program, which was launched by the City of Vienna to support adaptation measures to climate change. The red-pink progress coalition initiated this program in 2021, with a total volume of 100 million euros by 2025. Every year, 20 million euros are available for appropriate measures to promote the microclimate in the various districts. These measures include unsealing areas to create green spaces and water areas, as well as installing fountains as local cooling zones.

In the concrete redesign of the forecourt, not only a multifunctional lawn of 1,335 m² will be created, but also meadow areas and perennial and grass areas, a total of 319 m² and 151 m². The suggestions of local residents, who were actively involved in the planning, received particular attention.

The influence of urban greenery

Green spaces, such as those sought in the project, have a demonstrable impact on the microclimate. Loud greenKama Plants act as natural air filters, absorbing pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and ozone. They also lower the ambient temperature through transpiration and the creation of shade, which is particularly important in an urban environment. These measures not only help cope with heat waves, but also promote biodiversity and create habitats for numerous species.

Another aspect of the planned redesign is to improve the feeling of safety through new lighting along the main paths. In addition, the forecourt will continue to function as a central public transport hub. The project is scheduled to be completed by autumn 2025 and therefore offers added value for all Penzing residents.

Overall, the redesign of the forecourt of the Breitensee S-Bahn station exemplifies the City of Vienna's commitment to implementing innovative solutions to combat climate change and at the same time increasing the quality of life of city residents. Early citizen participation shows that urban planning in the spirit of sustainability also takes the opinions and needs of the population seriously.
