Vienna election 2025: SPÖ remains ahead, FPÖ significantly strengthened!
The final spurt to the upcoming Vienna election on April 27th is coming to a head. According to current surveys, the SPÖ remains the clear number one with a predicted vote share of 38.6 percent. This shows that although the party has recorded declines compared to the 2020 elections, when it achieved 41.6 percent, it still manages to maintain its position at the top. This development should be viewed particularly against the background of increasing dissatisfaction among voters, who are expressing concern about high rent, electricity and food prices as well as a growing feeling of insecurity. According to oe24.at, the FPÖ could benefit from this dissatisfaction and increase its vote from 7 percent to over 21 percent.
As the polls show, the FPÖ is stable in second place with a share of 21.8 percent, which is three times more than in the last election. Despite these gains, however, the FPÖ is unlikely to come close to first place, as is the case at the federal level. At the same time, the ÖVP has lost support and is primarily concerned with immigration issues, while economic issues are neglected.
Three-way battle for third place
In the race for third place it will be exciting between the Greens, the ÖVP and the Neos. The Greens have a poll average of 12.3 percent, which means a decrease of 2.5 percentage points compared to 2020. Their position could come under further pressure due to the increasing popularity of the Neos, which reached 9.2 percent and thus increased by almost two percentage points. The ÖVP, on the other hand, remains at 11.1 percent and has therefore lost almost half of its vote share from 2020.
Among the smaller parties, the KPÖ appears to be below the five percent threshold at 3.8 percent, which reduces its chances of entering the Vienna state parliament. Team HC Strache is not included in the current surveys because it has not been able to achieve the required four percent in the last 52 weeks.
Voter dissatisfaction as an indicator
The general dissatisfaction with the government's work could not only influence the results of the Vienna election at the federal level, but also shows a growing tendency towards opposition parties. The context is relevant in that the next National Council election is scheduled for 2029. Meanwhile, voters remain focused on issues that matter to them, such as low energy prices and affordable housing. According to DIE PRESSE there are clear demands among voters: taxes for the super-rich and more money for health and education are very popular.
Overall, the election is an exciting race in which the parties' different approaches meet with voters' interest. The next few days will be crucial as voters cast their ballots and Vienna's political landscape changes, perhaps permanently.
