Vienna in excitement: Raser arrested-e-scooter with 87 km/h stopped!

A current focus campaign by the Viennese police has shown that compliance with the traffic rules in e-scooter traffic in Vienna urgently needs to be improved. On Wednesday, June 13, 2025, officials from the state transport department and the uniformed bicycle service in districts 1, 3, 8, 16 and 19 checked a total of 112 road users. The result was alarming: an e-scooter driver was stopped with breathtaking 87 km/h-more than three times the permitted top speed of 25 km/h. The handlebar was displayed accordingly and further 165 organ mandates were issued, which indicates significant disregard for traffic regulations.

In the previous year, a similar control on October 21, 2024 showed similar things. At that time, the officers were also looking for violations under e-scooter and bicycle drivers. The results were sobering: 148 organ mandates and 90 ads due to various violations were exhibited among drivers. In particular, an e-scooter driver who was traveling at 54 km/h was pulled out of circulation. These incidents show that the speed of e-scooters is often exceeded, causing a serious risk to traffic safety.

traffic rules for e-scooters in Vienna

The legal framework for the use of e-scooters are clearly defined in Austria. E-scooters may only achieve a maximum type of construction of 25 km/h and must meet certain safety regulations, such as effective braking device and sufficient lighting in the dark. In addition, driving on walkers and sidewalks in Vienna is fundamentally prohibited. Instead, cycling systems and lanes must be selected if available to ensure the safety of all road users. The use of e-scooters on sidewalks is only permitted if this is permitted by the authority and takes place at step speed.

It is also essential that the regulations also affect the behavior of the drivers. E-scooters may not be operated with more than one passenger, and making calls without a hands-free device is not permitted while driving. Furthermore, e-scooters must have the required equipment in order to meet the applicable security standards.

The Viennese police continue to plan regular checks to increase traffic safety and to raise awareness of compliance with traffic rules. Road users are asked to find out about the applicable regulations and to comply with them in order to ensure the security in the city.
