USG shooters shine at the Austrian Open in Hopfgarten

In Hopfgarten, where the saying “broken glass brings luck” is not just a figure of speech, last weekend was an exciting event for the USG Bludenz-Bürs shooters. A small incident occurred during a dinner when a serving lady accidentally spilled a full beer, including broken pieces, on a participant's clothing. Time would tell whether this incident would bring good fortune or disaster.

The Austrian Open 2024 took place from October 4th to 6th, where numerous new shooters from Vorarlberg were welcomed. Among the athletes was a delegation from Bavaria, which relied on a Vorarlberg legionnaire to increase its chances.

The medal hunt

An exciting internal duel between the shooters Stoderegger and Selb caused a stir. In the Pistol 1500 discipline, Selb was able to outwit Stoderegger and take first place on the podium. Interestingly, it turns out that both shooters achieved the same number of rings and number of inner tens in the Optical 1500 discipline, but Stoderegger, thanks to clever scoring, relegated him to fourth place. A little banter among the audience suggested that the scales might have tipped the scales.

But Selb didn't let the placement demotivate him and won a gold medal with his Stock Semi-Automatic Pistol 5.5". The shooter Torghele also showed his skills and won a silver medal in the same discipline.

For Selb, however, the competition wasn't over yet. To expand his medal collection, he took home another bronze medal in the Pistol 1500 discipline. There were also exciting curiosities in the Revolver 1500 area, where Stoderegger won ahead of Berkmann. It should be noted that both shooters achieved results that pushed the HighMaster off the podium. Stoderegger, hungry for further success, was also able to secure bronze in the Rifle 1500, Service Revolver 2.75" and Super Magnum disciplines.

Successful participation

In total, the USG Bludenz-Bürs was able to win eleven medals at the Austrian Open. Whether the unfortunate incident with the beer is seen as an omen for the competition is up to each individual. However, one thing is certain: the shooters will continue to be enthusiastic about being active in Hopfgarten in the future, and the memories of this competition will stay with them for a long time.
