Bludenz starts its own energy transition: Renewable community founded
In Bludenz, the course is being set for a sustainable energy supply. The city council has unanimously decided to establish a renewable energy community (EEG). This allows the Alpine city to use local electricity generation from hydropower and photovoltaics (PV), which not only reduces the ecological footprint but also optimizes the city's energy costs.
Mayor Simon Tschann emphasizes how important it is to use the self-generated electricity from the local PV and hydroelectric power plants for urban purposes. "We have always wanted to promote energy efficiency. With the EEG we will be able to supply our municipal buildings, schools and even street lighting independently," explains Tschann, convinced of the advantages of this initiative.
The background of the renewable energy community
The Renewable Energy Expansion Act (EAG) forms the legal basis for the establishment of these EEGs. Such a community allows electricity to be generated, stored and distributed across property boundaries. This means that all members of the community can benefit from the self-generated energy, which not only increases security of supply but is also environmentally friendly.
"The renewable energy community gives us the opportunity to establish a local and sustainable energy supply in Bludenz. We are thereby strengthening our independence from the public grid and making an active contribution to the energy transition," says Energy City Councilor Martina Brandstetter.
The EEG will probably lead to a significant reduction in energy costs. According to initial estimates, the city will be able to use more than 90% of the electricity it produces independently. It is also hoped that there will be savings in taxes and through discounts that network operators offer for EEGs.
The unanimous decision to establish the EEG shows the city of Bludenz's joint effort to clearly convert its energy supply to renewable sources. This initiative represents a significant step towards an environmentally conscious and economically viable energy future, with the city government focusing on local production of clean energy.
The energy industry landscape in Bludenz could change sustainably as a result of this step, with the city sending a significant signal to other communities. This development is not only of regional interest, but also underlines the relevance of renewable energies in the context of the global energy transition and climate protection.
