Help for Uganda: Bishop Glettler calls for the fundraising campaign
Bishop Hermann Glettler leads a call to support an important project in the caramoja region, the northeastern part of Uganda, where almost three quarters of the population live below the poverty border. Less than half of the children attend school here, which underlines the need for training projects. With the support of brother and sister in need, it is collected for craft training that offer the people on site new professional perspectives.
As part of the project, which is carried out in cooperation with the Mill Hill Missionaries, young people are given the opportunity to learn professions such as Schneider, hairdresser or Schuster. These training not only offer long -term income opportunities, but also contribute to the economic stability of the entire region. Bishop Glettler appeals to the people in Tyrol to support the initiative: "This is how Advent expectations become a concrete encouragement, especially for young people."
urgent need for support
The region is severely affected by decades of violent conflicts that have isolated the area from the rest of the country. Marika Eisner, managing director of brother and sister in need, emphasizes the serious effects of illiteracy and lack of basic care: "74 % of people live below the poverty border." Alarming is also the low life expectancy, which is only 48 years in this region. Valuable training can be made possible for very small amounts, with 25 euros already sufficient for three -month training. 162 euros are required for one -year training including craft utensils. Community learning
A central element of the project are the so-called "empowerment groups", in which the participants learn, but also experience community. Anyone who is interested in participating in the project initially joins such a group. Within these groups, young people not only receive professional training, but also the opportunity to learn more about savings associations and sustainable agriculture. These groups also act as safe spaces for an open dialogue on important social issues.
The initiative aims to enable people in Karamoja a life in freedom and dignity and to permanently improve their quality of life. Special emphasis is placed on strengthening the community in order to promote organized and active action by the participants.
The project was launched in collaboration by the Kenyan Joseph Missionar P. Philip Adede Amek and the East Tyrolean P. Leonhard Wiedemayr, who died in 2022. P. Philip Adede Amek will be in Tyrol to present the project at benefit concerts that will take place on November 19 in Lienz and on November 21st in Schwaz.
The Diocesan Foundation Brother and Sister in Need has been active in Tyrol since 1961 and has been involved in several focus countries, including El Salvador, Bolivia and Tanzania. The aim of the foundation is to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged people and to promote peace and sustainability. Numerous projects are already supporting the strengthening of human rights and rural development in Uganda. Donations given for the initiatives of the foundation can also be deducted from tax.
