Kufstein: High cocaine consumption shocked-drug analysis reveals trends!

A current analysis of drug use in Austria reveals alarming results. On behalf of the European Union's drug agency, Innsbruck forensic medicine has carried out a comprehensive investigation by the wastewater, which depicts the lifestyle of around 3.5 million people in Austria and South Tyrol. This investigation, as part of the EU-wide drug monitoring, shows that cocaine consumption in the west of the country is significantly higher than in the east. The district of Kufstein, which records the highest cocaine consumption per capita, is particularly striking, while Innsbruck performs higher compared to Bolzano in South Tyrol, as the Tyrolean ORF website reported.

dominance of cannabis and alcohol

The analysis that wastewater from 190 municipalities examined in Austria also showed that cannabis remains the most consumed drug in the country. The average consumption of THC is eleven grams per 1000 inhabitants. The consumption of alcohol and nicotine also shows a certain uniformity in Austria, whereby each inhabitant consumes more than one glass of wine and three to four cigarettes on average, as Herbert Oberacher, head of the wastewater laboratory, explained. For cocaine, the average daily consumption was around 1.4 grams per 1000 inhabitants, with significant differences between the regions.

The results also indicate an interesting pattern: On weekends, the consumption of alcohol, cocaine and MDMA increased, which indicates that these substances are often used as party drugs. These trends are of great importance for the responsible authorities, since they provide valuable knowledge about current drug use that can be used to combat the drug problem. A total of Austria delivers 13 percent of all European data records for drug monitoring, which underlines the relevance of these surveys, the result of the comprehensive wastewater analysis of forensic medicine, such as the tiroler orf and Krone reported.
