Jessica Pilz secures overall World Cup ranking in climbing

Jessica Pilz from Haag, district of Amstetten, showed a remarkable performance at the last lead competition of the climbing season and secured victory in the World Cup discipline. For the Olympic bronze medalist, this is the crowning glory of a very successful season. With her victory, she not only won the competition, but also the overall ranking of the World Cup in her discipline.

on Sunday Pilz secured the finale through fourth place in the semi -finals and thus demonstrated its strength and determination. In the final she mastered the demanding route with flying colors and set the standards for her competitors by reaching 48 handles. None of the other participants could surpass them, which underlines their impressive dominance in this competition. Behind her landed the Japanese Ai Mori with 46 handles and the American Anastasia Sanders with 45 handled.

"The victory surprises me a bit, after the semi -final I didn't think I could climb onto the podium," said Pilz after the competition. She continued to comment that the season had taken a long time and that she felt the tiredness, but she just wanted to get everything out again. In addition, she is third -placed in the election to Austria's athlete in 2024.

With her victory, mushroom secured 1,000 points, making Olympic champion Janja Garnbret (SLO), who had not participated in the last competition. In the overall ranking, Pilz lands in first place with 3,220 points, just like in the previous year. "I would not have expected that because I had to climb top 2 and were other athletes in the World Cup in a better starting point. I am delighted with the victory in the World Cup ranking," she emphasized.

Mattea Pötzi reached 29+ in the semi-finals and landed in 16th place. Despite a challenging seasonal final, she can look forward to seventh place in the Lead World Cup ranking. "The entire season went great, I was in four out of six World Cups in the final and once on the podium. I have always been pleasantly surprised and I want to take this swing with me," said Pötzi optimistic.

Julia Fišer came 22 with 26 handles and explained that she had to struggle with jet lag for the first time in her life. Nevertheless, she was satisfied with her performance because after several difficult years she was able to fight back and could prove that she can continue to climb at a high level.

Fabian Leu, the national coach of the climbing sports association, was enthusiastic about the performance of his protégés: "This is a crowning glory for Jessy. She once again delivered to the point, just great. Mattea and Julia can also be satisfied, it was not the absolute top performance, but very solid."

The success of the athletes at the World Cup is another sign of the quality of sport in Austria. How the season will develop and what challenges the athletes have to master next year remains to be seen.
