Handball women win against the Netherlands: recovery before the European Championships

Germany's handball players have achieved an important victory in their preparation for the European Championship. They defeated the Dutch national team, a former world champion, with a final score of 27:23 (12:10). This encounter took place in an exciting setting and served as an important step for national coach Markus Gaugisch's team to gain self-confidence for the challenges ahead, especially for the preliminary round game at the European Championships against the Netherlands in around five weeks.

Captain Alina Grijseels proved to be the team's best thrower and scored eight goals. This follows a strong performance at the Golden League tournament in Norway, where the DHB women lost to Olympic champions Norway 30:32 on Thursday, but still put in a respectable performance. Another highlight will be the final tough test against Denmark on Sunday at 3:45 p.m., which completes the preparations for the European Championship.

Game play and performance

The match was quite tough in front of around 2,000 spectators, but the DHB women showed more well-thought-out moves. Despite weaker phases in which Germany did not score their own goal for around seven minutes both before and after half-time, the team did not allow themselves to be discouraged. Especially in the 45th minute, they broke away for the first time with three goals when the score was 19:16, which meant the end of the Netherlands' hope of fighting back. They had beaten Germany in the game for fifth place at the World Cup last year.

For the upcoming European Championships, which will take place in Hungary, Austria and Switzerland from November 28th to December 15th, the DHB women hope to gain valuable competition experience from the test games against top teams. The goal is clear: They want to play a decisive role in the medal fight after the Olympic adventure ended in the quarterfinals.

In the preliminary round of the European Championship, Germany will not only face the Netherlands, but also Ukraine and Iceland. The start of the final preparation phase under Gaugisch will begin on November 18th, including a dress rehearsal against the European Championship hosts Austria on November 24th in the Olympiahalle Innsbruck.
