First HLPS class in Lienz: A year full of challenges and opportunities!
The Higher Education Institute for Nursing and Social Care (HLPS) in Lienz, which opened in autumn 2023, has established itself as an important training center in Tyrol within a year. Dolomite town reports that the school offers a five-year training course with a high school diploma as well as parallel training to become a nursing assistant. The students have the opportunity to choose a nursing assistant qualification after three years. At the beginning of the first school year, 31 young people were enrolled in the class, but three of them changed in the first semester. Currently, 26 female students and two male students are continuing their dual training.
The class leader Magnus Senfter emphasizes that the students are a socially committed group. Many of them have the desire to work in jobs that enable direct contact with people. The practice-oriented teaching promotes early access to the nursing sector and emphasizes the need for qualified specialists in this industry. The HLPS Lienz in cooperation with the Institute for Health Education Lienz plans to adapt its training offerings to meet growing requirements.
Training focuses
The training at the HLPS is diverse and covers various specialist areas. The subject of human sciences, which deals with psychology and related topics, is particularly popular. In addition, students in Austria are only allowed to carry out practical nursing activities from the age of 17. In the first year of training, they complete an internship in kindergarten, which takes place every Friday in their home communities. From the second year onwards, they have the opportunity to gain practical experience in nursing homes or day care centers.
The HLPS timetable shows that the theoretical portion predominates in the first grade, with the practical portion increasing in the following years:
| Class | Number of hours | theory | IGB |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st class | 35 | 28 | 2 |
| 2nd class | 38 | 25 | 9 |
| 3rd class | 37 | 21 | 12 |
| 4th grade | 38 | 16 | 16 |
| 5th grade | 37 | 14 | 17 |
Review and outlook
State Councilor Hagele speaks positively about the new training facility and describes the social relevance of the HLPS as a response to the increasing demand for qualified nursing staff. According to information from KOFA The need for personnel in the health and social sectors will continue to increase in the coming years. It is therefore crucial to attract well-trained skilled workers and to promote the attractiveness of professions in these sectors.
The HLPS in Lienz is the second training center of its kind in Tyrol, the first being in Innsbruck. Director Gerald Kolbitsch reports on a positive course of the first year of training and a successful collaboration with the Igb. A second first class with 22 students will start in autumn 2023, which underlines the continuous development of the training offerings.
