Back on the floor
With the aim of getting the domestic biathlon sport back on the road to success, Sumann will focus in particular on the 2028 home World Championships in Hochfilzen. ÖSV sports director Mario Stecher praises Sumann's extensive experience and deep knowledge of biathlon, which will be of crucial importance for the team's realignment. This is seen as an essential step in order to optimally prepare Austrian athletes for future competitions.
The ÖSV general meeting has already responded to the need to make changes after the last few months did not produce the desired results. The announcement of a press conference by Sumann in Innsbruck on Thursday promises further insights into his plans and visions for the future of biathlon in Austria.
An impressive biography
Christoph Sumann began his sporting career as a cross-country skier before switching to biathlon. In 1999, during the Winter Universiade in Štrbské Pleso, he won his first international medals, including two gold medals in various disciplines. His switch to biathlon activities in the 2000/01 season was initially unspectacular, but he would soon cause a stir.
His successes ranged from several top 10 placements in the World Cup to podium finishes, including at the World Cup in Pokljuka, where he won two victories within two days in 2007. Particularly notable was his performance at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where he won two silver medals, defending his place among the best biathletes in the world.
Sumann's life's work shows not only the successes of an athlete, but also his consistency and his will to advance the Austrian sport of biathlon. With his appointment as sporting director, a new chapter begins that could be of great importance for him as well as for the entire team.
