Tyrolean pupils: The inside set signs of sustainability and environmental protection

In Tyrol, numerous school classes dealt intensively with sustainable topics last year. Questions on the environment, such as the consequences of plastic waste and the sustainable cultivation of food, were the focus of many projects. The interest and commitment of the students: There are no unnoticed inside: twelve school projects were submitted for the first Tyrolean sustainability prize, which was launched by the Bine Tirol network. The winners were recently awarded at the University of Innsbruck.

The Network Education for Sustainable Development, which includes 35 institutions, supports schools in conveying knowledge of sustainability and climate protection. Led by the institutions such as the state of Tyrol and the University of Innsbruck, the network aims to raise awareness of environmentally relevant topics.

The award winners

The jury, which rated the projects, attached great importance to creative solutions for specific sustainability challenges and the presentation of global relationships. Three projects stood out and were awarded prices.

The “Freight-Day on the Field” project of the Kramsach elementary school is particularly remarkable. Here the second classes worked with the Mariatal State Spirit School to manage a field at the Höfemuseum every Friday. The children not only learned the importance of sustainable food cultivation, but also took responsibility for the entire cultivation and harvest phase. The 17 goals for sustainable development of the 2030 Agenda were dealt with, which helped them better understand the global challenges.

Another outstanding project came from the Volders middle school. Under the title "Earth’s 11th Hour", the students devoted themselves to the topic of environmental pollution with the motto "There is no planet B" in English. As part of a climate complaint, they presented their self -designed posters and carried out a panel discussion. A creatively designed table made from plastic bottles that were consumed at school in just one month, impressively illustrated the problem of plastic pollution.

The social dimension of sustainability and equality was in the foreground in the technical school for economic professions in Wörgl. Under the “Renew4grow” project, the pupils planted trees as a sign against violence on women. A total of 200 trees at the school and in two partner schools, origin and Bruck an der Mur, were set, for which Austrian athletes were sponsored.
