Communities invest together in a new indoor swimming pool for Axams
In a recent decision by the communities of Axams, Birgitz, Götzens, Mutters and Natters, which are located in the Innsbruck-Land district, the green light was given for the construction of a new indoor swimming pool. The local councils have decided to contribute financially to this important project, the total cost of which is estimated at around 30 million euros.
The goal is to create a swimming pool that is open all year round in the western low mountain range. Despite the tight budget situation, the municipalities have decided to invest a maximum of one euro per resident per month in the regional pool over a period of 25 years. This measure was supported by a clear majority of all communities involved.
An indispensable project for the region
The mayors of the region emphasized the importance of the new indoor swimming pool in their statements: “The Western Low Mountains regional swimming pool in Axams is an indispensable offer for both the local population and regional tourism.” A pool that is open all year round is particularly important for school swimming. This decision also symbolizes the communities' sense of community: "We think outside our own box and show that the region stands together on important issues."
In August, the state of Tyrol presented a comprehensive swimming pool study that serves as a basic paper for the redesign of swimming pools in the region. Through cooperation between the state, municipalities and tourism associations, 75 million euros will be available over the next five years to promote new construction and renovations. The state will cover 50 million euros, while the municipalities will provide a total of 25 million euros. A necessary condition for this funding is the financial participation of the surrounding communities in the construction projects.
Financial support from various sources
Despite the sums already committed, financing the indoor swimming pool remains a challenge. The mayors emphasize that additional money is needed from the state of Tyrol, other surrounding communities as well as the Innsbruck tourism association and its holiday villages. The support is particularly important in order to meet the structural requirements of tourism. Many private room rental companies in the region want to offer their guests better amenities, including an indoor pool.
Until its closure, the former indoor swimming pool in Axams was a popular destination for locals, tourists and schools within a 30-minute drive. The reopening of such a swimming facility will not only increase the quality of life, but also strengthen and promote the tourism sector in the region.
